'2562 California Pepper' Lounge Chair, 2023
Found California Pepper Tree Trunk, Lidar Scanned, CNC Plasma Laser Cut Steel, Chemical Patina Finish, Sound Installation
About the Piece:
The beautifully shaped tree trunk; salvaged by Nakri from 2562 Kelton Ave. serves as the starting point of his design process - geared towards utilizing technology in the most human way possible.
The foundational natural element of wood was kept intact, and untouched purposefully - probing Nakri to think of ways to design around the structure without altering it. Nakri; Lidar Scanned the entire trunk, and was able to have a sense of its detailed topography in 3D which enabled him to design chair legs embracing the trunk. The curved supporting structure was reduced to a 2D form, and was then laser cut to perfect 4 slats of metal, combined to an interlocking system. The metal parts of the chair were treated with acid wash and patina, which gives it a special red-brown finish.
The Sound Installation:
Nakri's practice revolves around storytelling, and his pieces always come embedded with sonic experiences that convey a part of the piece's journey. The Ultrasonic Directional Parametric Array Speakers that are placed right above the person, generate a very personal sound installation only herd by the person who is sitting on the piece.
The sonic piece is comprised of a combination of spoken word and a piano score composed by pianist Aysedeniz.
